The day my high school English teacher introduced me to figures of speech was the day I truly fell in love with the language. Prior to my enlightenment, I had no idea I could put words together and make them mean something else. I was genuinely thrilled to discover a world populated by alliterations and assonances, by metaphors and similes, by paradoxes and oxymorons. I also loved that they had such cool names. Oh, onomatopoeia! I’m looking at you too, synecdoche.
Suddenly, watching my favorite TV series on Studio 23 made much more sense. Reading back issues of Reader’s Digest became more enjoyable. Writing turned into a passion. To say figures of speech are mighty awesome is a friggin’ understatement.
