101+Disqus

A couple of fellow Tumblr fiends have approached me asking how I managed to integrate Disqus on Jarred Bishop’s excellent theme called 101. As slick as the theme is, its markup somehow doesn’t make for easy Disqus integration, i.e., simply following the instructions on Disqus on how to put a commenting system on sites powered by Tumblr results in some elements going awry. So I set out to decipher the code and make some appropriate mods. In the end I came up with this bunch of html that makes for Disqus working properly within the theme.

To use the Disqus-ready 101 theme, copy the html code and paste it into your tumblelog’s theme box. Be sure to look for the two instances of disqusname in the code and replace each with your site’s Disqus short name before saving. Then open your Disqus account and edit the Comment Count Link settings for your site. You can go directly to these settings by entering this address: http://disqus.com/comments/settings/DISQUSSHORTNAME/?p=customize, replacing DISQUSSHORTNAME accordingly. You will be prompted to sign in if you aren’t logged in yet. Once you’ve landed on the settings customization page, click on the Appearance tab. The Comment Count Link options can be found at the bottom of the settings block. Enter ‘@’ for Zero comments, ‘@1’ for One comment and ‘@{num}’ for Multiple comments. Save your changes.

Admittedly, what I added were just minor mods, but I hope those seeking to put comments in their sites that use Jarred’s awesome theme will find the modified markup useful.

And oh, do let me know what you think.
